Good by nature: A nursery blossoms

No chemical pesticides, no synthetic fertilisers, no peat - no 'artificial herb' is grown at the Seidemann organic nursery.

The Seidemann family sees their company as having an ecological and social responsibility that is reflected in their work. Chemical substances are not used, because what counts here is sustainability.

The traditional company was founded over 100 years ago. Today, four generations later, the organic nursery is thus one of the oldest nurseries in Austria. The owner is now Erwin Seidemann: ‚I have tried to invest everything I have learned in the business and in the plant.‚ The investments have paid off. In 2015, Seidemann became the first certified organic flower nursery in Austria. The company is also a BIO AUSTRIA partner.

Doing it without chemical substances
Everything that is good for the plant is good for us and vice versa‚, says Erwin Seidemann. That is why the organic nursery does not use chemical pesticides, inhibitors, synthetic fertilisers or peat. Instead, they use teas, plant extracts and organic soil. All this contributes to strengthening the plants in a natural way. The Tyrolean company fertilises with sheep’s wool pellets, for example.

The cycle of nature
In its production processes, the Seidemann organic nursery uses grape marc, malt or plant residues, which means that everything remains in the cycle. This approach results in the highest plant quality according to the strictest organic guidelines. ‚An organic plant may not differ from the conventional plant – which has often been ‚made‘ a bit. But it has the added value of being ‚organic‘, of being able to smell it, of being able to touch it, of being able to eat it without residues flowing through my body‚, enthuses Erwin Seidemann. The organic idea is firmly rooted in the company.

Resource-saving production
Since the nursery was founded, the area of the site has already grown to 25,000 m², of which 3,000 m² is sales area and 7,000 m² is used for production. The production ranges from flowers to herbs and vegetable plants. All products are produced by using resource-saving processes. Thus, everything is done in harmony with nature. The fight against plastic also fits in with this sustainable thinking. Instead of using conventional plastic pots, the Seidemann organic nursery relies on containers made of decomposable materials such as wood fibre or sunflower seed shells. This principle has been applied since 2014 and the goal of being completely plastic-free is to be achieved as early as 2022.

A company with social commitment
With reference to its own mission statement, the Seidemann organic nursery is particularly committed to the integration of people with disabilities. Consequently, the Tyrolean Integration Award went to Seidemann in 2003. In 2006, the family business based in Völs was awarded the ‚Sozialmarie‘. However, the Seidemann organic nursery does not rest on its laurels. For years, they have been collecting donations for a good cause on the ‚Day of Cordiality‘. With projects like ‚Nature in the Garden‘ or with ATM (Abfall Tirol Mitte), they want to continue to fight environmental pollution.

All-round service
The range of services offered to its customers is wide and varied. The employees make sure that it is easy to get ‚on a green branch‘. The service includes, for example, garden design. The team accompanies the customers from planning to completion. Included in the service is the maintenance and care of, among other things, kitchen gardens, embankments or fountains and spring stones. The motto of the nature garden service is to design the green space in such a way that both humans and animals feel comfortable. Wet biotopes and wild shrub hedges entice birds, hedgehogs and bees to make regular visits to the garden at home. Interior design and the graves service complete the sustainable offer.

Sustainable thinking also in customer service
Of course, no chemicals are used in the services either, but organic fertilisers and pesticides. In the end, this benefits the customers.
