Märzengrund

'Märzengrund' is the touching and at the same time gripping story of a person who radically rebels against a society in which money rules and where only those who are rich in possessions seem to count for anything. Based on a play by Felix Mitterer and inspired by true events, this film addresses those questions that are more explosive than ever today: What kind of world do we want to live in? What values mean something to us? Who are we - and what do we really need?

The expectations of Elias are high. He is not only an excellent student, but also the son of the richest farmer in the Zillertal. Soon he is to take over the farm. But the more desperately he tries to fulfil the role intended for him, the more he feels that in truth he wants to lead a completely different life. And so one day at the end of the 1960s he makes a momentous decision: he renounces his inheritance. Against the will of his parents and against all odds, he goes into the lonely wilderness of the mountains - first to the high mountain pasture 'Märzengrund' and finally even higher, ever higher, to far above the tree line. Here, at last, Elias finds what he has always longed for down in the valley: unconditional freedom.
