Tijl Bex
Cinematographer/DOP and Editor
How did you get into film? What particularly attracted you to become part of this industry?
My story begins before the age of the mobile phone. Fresh out of art school, into a time when I travelled a lot through Europe and also tackled my first winter seasons in France. An incredible experience with so many unique moments and indescribable landscapes, but also interesting characters. ‚Hey, let’s shoot snowboard films like the pros‚, they said. This is where the desire to capture this on film arose. From the idea to the realisation, it takes commitment, passion and creativity – that’s how my love for the moving image was born.
What distinguishes Tirol as film region for you?
When I came to Innsbruck in 2008, I knew I had found the ideal base for all these adventures. The synergy of urbanity and Alpine character is simply an essential feature – it’s no coincidence that so many productions want to shoot here in the breathtaking Tirol.
Fifteen years ago I would not have dared to dream of the cinematic highlights I will experience here in the next few years!
We are curious: Tell us your favourite location in Tirol!
Somewhere out there, at the latest when the first rays of sunlight appear.
I can’t define the best location with one place, because as with filming, this is a constant development and rediscovery. I still discover new angles and perspectives, backdrops and locations every day.
But not only the location is important to me, but also the crew, whom you have to trust in such Alpine actions.
And now: The stage ist yours! Please introduce yourself and your field of activity.
Tijl Bex, Belgian by birth, whose roots now also lie in the Alps as a father of two.
I took the plunge over 13 years ago and have been working as an independent filmmaker here in Innsbruck ever since. I am a passionate cinematographer/DOP/editor.
Since my love for the mountains and snow brought me here, my speciality has also developed in the areas of action, sports, adventure, nature and adventure.
This gave me the opportunity to see some of the world, on the road as a cameraman for productions such as X-Games, Bergwelten, Pirate-Movie-Production, Redbull Media House etc.
Nowadays I work both as a sole trader and more and more as part of a collective and various agencies. We offer a broader spectrum, from documentaries to image films to commercial clips – but the outdoor scene is also close to our hearts.
For example, there is also the Mountain Film City Innsbruck network and my two colleagues Martin Venier and Bernie Kofler, with whom I am constantly on the road with the camera. Spoiler alert: Something big is coming!
Big cinema is also possible with a smaller team – modern film technology has made many things possible and so we can remain flexible in the alpine terrain. We have already been able to prove this and are also mighty proud of our international awards and film prizes.
Thanks for the spotlight, but it’s best to see for yourself at www.tijlbex.com – because a picture is worth a thousand words 😉
