What do organic apples have to do with hygiene solutions?
Not much at first glance, but the production of organic apple juice produces valuable waste products with potential for further recycling.
One example are waxes, which are transformed into a new raw material for cleaning formulations in the laboratory. Hygiene specialist hollu is currently researching this exciting task together with project partners – in line with its sustainability strategy.
In its daily work, hollu follows the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, or SDGs for short. What this strategy means in concrete terms is shown by the current apple pomace upcycling project that hollu launched together with the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI), BIO vom BERG and Cura Marketing GmbH in September 2020. During the production of organic apple juice, a large amount of press residues, so-called apple pomace, is produced every year. Among other things, this contains waxes that could be used, for example, in sustainable hollueco floor coatings. The Tyrolean hygiene specialist is consistently developing its ecological product line and researching environmentally friendly formulations. Over the next one and a half years, hollu and its three project partners will find out whether apple pomace will be a new product for the hollu range – supported by the innovation funding of the Tyrolean Government.
