Leo Decristoforo
Cinematographer/DOP
How did you get into film? What particularly attracted you to become part of this industry?
Like many of my colleagues, I got into filming in my youth through amateur films with friends, we used various Tyrolean locations as backdrops for our projects, such as Afling near Kematen and the Vomper Loch for a western. My first professional production was „Die Lachenden Schuhe“ (2014), a 40-minute documentary about musicians with Down syndrome, which was shown in the Leokino program and released on DVD by Polyglobe Music Austria.
The making of a movie is a complex process. The constantly changing circumstances demand a permanent redefinition of one’s own work. I cope well with this and receive something precious in return: I learn something new about the world. During my studies at the International Film School Cologne I was already able to shoot in various countries, including Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Pakistan, and learned a lot about other people and cultures. I enjoy working with other creatives and so far every project has been something new.
What distinguishes Tirol as a film region for you?
Many wonderful locations & interesting filmmakers and still untapped cinematic potential.
Tell us your favourite location in Tirol!
The Karwendel, especially the area around the Falkenhütte.
And now: The stage is yours! Please introduce yourselves and your field of activity.
Together with my wife Marina Decristoforo (who is also a filmmaker), we have been organizing the Pillusion Film Festival since 2021, which shows films by Austrian and international filmmakers every year at the end of August in a barn in Pill. The festival also offers accommodation for selected filmmakers and organizes workshops on lighting, 16mm analogue film and Q&As with the directors. With this festival we want to create a platform for independent cinema in the Schwaz area. www.pillusion.com
